California’s 2016 grape crush in at more than 4.2 million tons


wine grapesCalifornia produced more than 4.2 million tons of grapes in 2016, up 9.3 percent from 2015, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s grape crush report.

Red wine varieties represented the biggest share of the 2016 grape crush at nearly 2.28 million tons, up 11.6 from 2015. White varietals came in at more than 1.75 million tons, up 5.3 percent from 2015.

District 11, which includes San Joaquin County north of Highway 4 and Sacramento County south of US 50, produced 802,84 tons. That includes 165,634 tons of cabernet sauvignon and 146,881 tons of zinfandel.

In District 12, which encompasses San Joaquin County south of Highway 4 and Stanislaus  and Merced counties, 373,049 tons were produced. The largest varietal was cabernet sauvignon at 66,034.9 tons.

Statewide, the average prices per crop type in 2016 were:

  • red wine grapes at $918.34/ton, up 16.3 percent from 2015;
  • white wine grapes at $598.07/ton, up 10.7 percent;
  • raisin grapes – $213.64/ton, down 13.7 percent;
  • table grapes at $153.05/ton, down nearly 40 percent.
