Jana Marie Bolter, of Lathrop, pleaded guilty to felony charges of grand theft on Jan. 9 in San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Jana Bolter

Bolter, 49, has been in custody since September 2017, when she surrendered herself on charges she embezzled $878,770 from Brown Sand, Inc. She allegedly stole that amount through fraudulent payroll checks from 2010 to 2017.

A second count included using Brown Sand’s Staples Office Supply account to charge more than $6,000 in gift cards from 2009 to 2017.

Bolter was employed by Brown Sand, Inc., for 25 years, during which time she had become the company’s bookkeeper. She will be sentenced on Jan. 24.

Brown Sand, Inc., is a Lathrop-based gravel supply company that has been in operation since 1970. Bolter was the only person in charge of the company’s books at the time. The San Joaquin County District Attorney urges business owners to have at least two people overseeing company accounting.
