The San Joaquin County Fair needs help from the community. The fair’s Board of Directors is hosting a public meeting on Monday, Feb. 26, starting at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the challenges facing the annual event.
At the county fairgrounds, 1658 S. Airport Way, in Stockton, the Board will talk about increasing expenses and decreasing attendance. Community members are asked to attend to see how they might be of help.
“We’re not the first fair to face this challenge,” said Joe Bacchetti, Board president. “We know from the experiences of other fairs that great things can happen when a community comes together to support the annual fair and the fairgrounds on a year-round basis.”
Despite an uptick in rental business by 40 percent, the fair has seen a decrease in attendance, rising pension costs and costly infrastructure repairs. According to a release provided by the fair, “the meeting will include an insight into the financial operations of the fairgrounds, the steps that have been taken to reduce expenses and increase revenues and what will be needed to ensure financial sustainability.”
Attendees will also be able to learn more about Friend of the Fair, the nonprofit organization that raises funds on behalf of the SJ County Fair.
“It’s extremely important that we hear from our community,” Bacchetti said. “I encourage people to come out and share their ideas.”
