Annie Wersching, actress in ‘The Last of Us’ and ’24’, dies

Actress Annie Wersching passed away on Sunday, January 29. Her death has surprised the entertainment industry and fans of series like 24 and Bosch, in which she participated. She’s also relevant to fans of The Last of Us video game: Wersching played one of that franchise’s key characters.

In 2020, Annie Wersching was reported to be suffering from cancer. This disease, however, did not completely stop her acting dynamics: during these years she participated in projects such as Star Trek: Picard and The Rookie.

Fans of the video game The Last of Us, whose television adaptation by HBO is being one of the most talked about hits today, may remember Annie Wersching because she voiced the character of Tess. She is the main companion of Joel, the other protagonist of the game, before the arrival of Ellie.

The statement on the death of Annie Wersching

Through a statement, Stephen Full, Annie Wersching’s husband, said the following:

“Today there is a void in the soul of the family, but they left us the tools to fill it. She always found wonder in simple moments. She didn’t need music to dance. She taught us not to wait for adventure to find you. Go find. She is everywhere and we will find her. We will do it”.

So far, it is not the only statement published. Jon Cassar, who was the director and producer of 24, said the following in another text:

“My heart is broken into more pieces than I can count. Annie came to me with an open heart and an infectious smile. She became more than just a co-worker, she was a true friend to me, my family, and every member of the cast and crew who worked with her. Annie, we will miss you, you made your mark, and we are all the better for it.”

His work in the following television productions is also added to his time at 24, the format in which his career developed the most:

  • Bosch
  • runaways
  • The Rookie
  • Star Trek: Picard

His work on The Last of Us

Long before The Last of Us was the gaming and streaming phenomenon that it is today, Annie Wersching gave voice to a character that stayed in the hearts of several video game fans, perhaps thousands: Tess. For those who have not followed the game or the television adaptation, she is a woman who serves as a backup to Joel Miller, the protagonist.

Tess has a tough personality, but she brings a point of sensitivity and complicity that humanizes her, just like Joel. Annie Wersching gave voice to this figure in 2013, when the video game was released by Naughty Dog. Neil Druckmann, one of the creators of the game and a key part of the television adaptation of The Last of Us, published through his Twitter profile the next:

“I miss my friend who helped bring Tess to life. Annie, you left us too soon. You will always be a part of the TLoU & Naughty Dog family!”

A sign that Annie Wersching’s departure affects not only the world of television and series, but also one with which there is an increasing relationship: video games. The actress was defined as a reserved person and, at the same time, and from what the messages expressed suggest, a very warm woman and mother.
