Initial reports spoke of 20th Century Studios as the company responsible for producing and distributing the upcoming film about the mythical 19th century French emperor, directed by Ridley Scott. However, the Disney affiliate ended up giving up the project at the end of 2020, momentarily leaving it destitute. Manzana came to the rescue and this week his acquisition of Kitbag, where the one and great Joaquin Phoenix will play Napoleon Bonaparte.

According to a Deadline exclusive, Apple Studios has acquired the rights to the historical drama Kitbag, committing to financing it. In addition to directing, Ridley Scott will serve as producer through his Scott Free company, chaired by Kevin Walsh and with which Apple previously had a television agreement.
“Napoleon is a man who has always fascinated me,” Scott told the outlet. “He came out of nowhere to rule everything, but in the meantime he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josefina. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her. And he destroyed himself in the process.
The title of the film comes from a well-known saying in English that, translated into Spanish, states: «There is a general’s staff in the backpack [kitbag] of each soldier ». Under this reference, the origins of Napoleon Bonaparte and his accelerated rise to become emperor of the French in 1804 will be recounted. According to a widespread synopsis, his virtues as a military strategist and war visionary will be remembered, but also the way in which his volatile relationship with Josefina de Beauharnais influenced his race to power.
The Oscar winner Joaquin phoenix will take on the title role of Kitbag, his first collaboration with Ridley Scott in more than two decades, since Gladiator (2000).
“No actor could play Napoleon like Joaquin,” said the 83-year-old filmmaker. «He created one of the most complex emperors in film history in Gladiator [el trastornado Cómodo] and we will create another with his Napoleon. It’s a brilliant script written by David Scarpa, and today there is no better partner than Apple to bring a story like this to a global audience.
Kitbag’s financing, provided by Apple, would be similar to that of the thriller Emancipation, also sheltered by the apple company and starring Will Smith. However, the figure would not be anywhere near that corresponding to another ambitious property of the brand: the drama Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese, whose budget exceeds $ 180 million (via).
Kitbag to start production in early 2022 in the UK. Before that, Ridley Scott has yet to film Gucci in the spring of this year and release The Last Duel on October 15, 2021.
