The Central Exploitation Commission of the Tajo Segura Transfer has authorized, at its meeting this Monday, a transfer of 38 cubic hectometres of water for this month of August.
It is indicated in a statement by Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (Miteco), in which it details that the status report of the Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (Cedex) states that, as of August 1, the volume impounded in Entrepeñas and Buendía was 687.1 cubic hectometres.
“This figure is higher than the threshold of 661 cubic hectometres that corresponds to the limit of exceptional hydrological situation for the month of August,” they describe in the statement, and therefore, “the system continues at level 2 and must be authorized, in automatic application of the current regulation, a transfer of 38 cubic hectometres ». Thus, the system remains in the hydrological normality situation in which it entered last March.
The meeting also analyzed the existing problems to undertake the repair work of the breakdown that occurred in April in the La Bujeda main dam, after detecting leaks downstream of it.
After continuous and controlled monitoring of the process by the General Directorate of Water and the Tagus Hydrographic Confederation, it has been considered that it is necessary “to continue this process with the emptying of the basin as of September 1 in order to start the repair work.”
“Although the situation of the infrastructure does not pose an imminent danger from the point of view of its safety, technically it is the most appropriate time to start the works, in order to minimize the negative consequences derived from the rains next autumn”, they affirm.
This entire process is expected to last thirteen weeks, during which time the pumping of water to the channel of the Tajo-Segura transfer will be disabled.
