A decade for a series is an achievement as the crowded patio of television productions is, regardless of the convenience of lengthening it to that point. The hilarious The Big Bang Theory (Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, 2007-2019), for example, was with us for twelve years without decaying; the irregular The Walking Dead (Frank Darabont and Angela Kang, since 2010) has also exceeded that limit; and the turn is now up to American horror story (Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, since 2011), which opens its ten season on Disney Plus with the title of Double Feature (2021).
The dense, unhealthy and brutal atmosphere of Murder House (2011-2012) greatly satisfied the audience, reaching its climax in the insuperable Asylum (2012-2013). The next five stories, Coven (2013-2014), Freak Show (2014-2015) and Hotel (2015-2016), keep the type. My Roanoke Nightmare (2016) is very interesting in the first episodes and, later, it collapses due to its implausibilities and a continuous senseless massacre. With Cult (2017) and Apocalypse (2018) the good tone of American Horror Story is recovered to later lose it with the absolutely pedestrian 1984 (2019).
‘Double Feature’: from ‘American Horror Story’ to Stephen King
Perhaps, the beginning of Double Feature with the chapter “Cape Fear” (10×01) It is the weirdest feeling of the AMC series to date; not only because of the circumstances of its initial scene, but also because we later intuit that the terrifying anomalies that, surely, are going to occur encompass the biggest extension for now on the stages of American Horror Story. And what might initially remind us of Murder House actually brings us an aroma to the elements of the novelist Stephen King’s narrative; more than one, apparently.
But, although the formula sounds familiar, that does not prevent us from experimenting a great curiosity for knowing what happens. On the one hand, due to the possibilities of this variation in a common ground and, on the other, thanks to the credit that Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (Scream Queens) deserve for having given us in other seasons a captivating horror, acquired these two decades with steadfast despite obvious stumbles.
The threatening does not take long to appear and the rarefied environment is built by accumulation of abnormalities and pushes of the shrill soundtrack, of a rope to tighten the nerves, signed by the usual Mac Quayle (Ratched); And it works very well in certain more elaborate montage sequences. What’s more, the unusual spaciousness of the exteriors it adds to the sense of strangeness because we are not used to them in American Horror Story.
The taste of familiar faces
At this stage, meet again with the cast Regulars of the series seems like an annual tradition. AND it is a pleasure that Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have again Finn Wittrock (La La Land) and Lily Rabe (Legion) to play Harry and Doris Gardner, with Sarah Paulson (Carol) as Tuberculosis Karen, with Adina Porter (House) in the skin Sheriff Burleson, with Evan Peters (Mare of Easttown) and the great Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Austin Sommers and Sarah Cunningham and with Leslie Grossman (Dexter) to play Ursula.
New features in American Horror Story suppose the little Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Black Widow) as Alma Gardner and the well-known Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone) giving life to Mickey. Both and the others, directed by director John J. Gray (9-1-1), who at the moment has more experience as an assistant in Ángel (Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt, 1999-2004) or Firefly (Whedon, 2002-2003), producer on the canceled Drive (Tim Minear and Ben Queen , 2007) or in Feud (Ryan Murphy, Jaffe Cohen and Michael Zam, 2017) or screenwriter who is in charge of the production.
He does not defend himself badly the American filmmaker in “Cape Fear.” But, of course, if one considers that is very familiar with the series since he joined the script writing in “Bitchcraft” (3×01) and that, in short, he has already shot two from 1984, the ones entitled “Mr. Jingles ”(9×02) and“ Final Girl ”(9×09), shouldn’t surprise us in the least. However, his activity does not shine behind the camera either, except for the sequence of the different occupations to the rhythm of a violin solo. So, if you do not increase or decrease the level by Double Feature, it will be a worthy season from American Horror Story, but in no case of the most outstanding.
