15 minutes. US President Joe Biden will travel to Houston (Texas) on Friday after the powerful winter storm in recent days that left millions of citizens without electricity and dozens of dead, the White House reported Tuesday.
“The president will discuss the winter storm relief efforts to move toward recovery and the incredible resilience shown by the people of Houston and Texas,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at her daily press conference.
Biden will also visit a medical center in Houston that is part of the vaccine distribution network to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, Psaki added.
Power outages caused by the winter storm, one of the largest in recent Texas history, left millions of residents without heat.
At least 59 deaths are registered so far by the phenomenon.
Texas is the second most populous state in EEUU, with 30 million inhabitants.
Biden signed the declaration of “major disaster” in Texas this weekend. This just 24 hours after the governor of that state, Greg Abott, requested it.
The measure makes it possible to offer not only public assistance to the counties to recover infrastructure and take on other tasks, but also includes support for people who suffered damage to their homes.
