15 minutes. The president-elect of the United States (USA), Joe Biden, announced on Thursday new nominations to occupy various positions in his future government, among which the lawyer Katherine Tai stands out, as a representative of Commerce, and recovers veterans of the Barack Administration Obama (2009-2017), as Denis McDonough and Susan Rice.
In a statement, Biden reported his appointments, including Tom Vilsack, to head the Department of Agriculture; Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; former Obama Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough as Secretary of Veterans Affairs; and former National Security Advisor Susan Rice, as director of the Council on Domestic Policy.
“This dedicated and distinguished group of public officials will offer the highest level of experience, compassion and integrity to solve problems and expand the capabilities of Americans in the face of significant challenges,” Biden said in a statement.
Tai already worked for the Office of the Foreign Trade Representative during the Obama presidency as the chief attorney in charge of China affairs.
Since Donald Trump’s arrival in the White House four years ago, Tai was the Democrats’ chief business adviser on the House Ways and Means Committee.
She is the second Asian-born woman appointed by Biden to his Cabinet with ministerial rank. The first is Neera Tanden, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
McDonough is an old acquaintance of Biden. He served in the Obama Administration as Chief of Staff, Deputy National Security Advisor, and Chief of Staff for the National Security Council.
Likewise, Vilsack, former Iowa governor, already held the same position as secretary of agriculture during the Obama presidency.
The Cabinet continues to be configured
With these nominations, Biden continues to draw his future Cabinet. Among the names that were already known are Antony Blinken as Secretary of State and Janet Yellen as Secretary of the Treasury. Also Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of National Security.
The president-elect also nominated Xavier Becerra as secretary of Health and Social Services, Lloyd Austin as head of the Pentagon, Avril Haines director of National Intelligence or Linda Thomas-Greenfield as ambassador to the United Nations.
Of the departments that remain to be selected, Justice is the highest. Biden’s office said it plans to announce this position before Christmas.
