In addition to the prequel to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – 64%, which was no longer so well received by the public, fans of this universe did not cease in their efforts to maintain the fame of LOTR. Certainly years ago we saw more people dressed up as the characters at conventions than we do now, but although other franchises have taken their place, the true fans are still very active. Also, the next series of Amazon, inspired by other JRR Tolkien titles within this same universe, could raise the wave again.
Within the fans, there is a large group that sees LOTR as more than just a fantastic story. For these people, this world is one that represents them from religion to the races it displays. Hence the idea of making LOTR a religion and that some people even change their body to look like one of the characters. The news that a man has undergone various operations to look like an orc went viral long ago, and now the story of one who leads a life as a hobbit has become popular.
On LOTR hobbits are quiet beings that live in the Shire; they like to eat and attend parties and avoid conflicts of any kind. That is why the fact that the one in charge of wearing the ring on the mission to destroy it belongs to this race is so important. Frodo, in the movies played by Elijah Wood, has no interest in becoming a hero or fighting a war that is not his, but this attitude and his lack of ambition make him perfect for overcoming temptation.

Despite not being handsome warriors or natural leaders, hobbits lead an enviable life. The story of Nicolas Gentile, a 37-year-old Italian who wants to live like a hobbit and build his own Shire. In an interview with The Guardian, Gentile explained that reading and watching fantasy movies was no longer enough to satisfy his taste for the genre:
I kept reading about other people’s lives. I decided that I wanted to live my hobbit life to the fullest. Some believe that I am trying to escape from reality. Nothing further than that. I am living my dream, my adventure.
Gentile bought a piece of land that will serve to locate his Shire. This news reached the ears of the cast of the trilogy, who decided to support his initiative. Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd and Sean Astin sent him different messages.
Wood sent him a video where he said:
Hope this makes you happy, healthy and well. I went to your Instagram and it is amazing what you are doing. I love the costumes, the individual photos of scenarios that you have done, in front of the fire, smoking a pipe. It is so beautiful. Well done! I can’t wait to see your progress and I’ll follow you on Instagram. It is so amazing. If I’m ever near the woods, in your county, I’d love to visit you.
For his part, Boyd invited people to participate in the project:
I know a friend of Nicolas! It’s me, Pippin Took. Let’s help Nicolas build his own Shire, I think it will be a wonderful thing!
As part of the project, Gentile joined his friends who were followers of LOTR to take a trip to throw the single ring to Mount Vesuvius. It was an excursion of almost 300 kilometers, from Chieti to Naples and Sean Astin, who gives life to Sam, sent him a few words of admiration:
I know you walked 300 km to launch the ring to Vesuvius. To Vesuvius! That is an amazing thing! I don’t know if the Italian mountains are Mordor, but all that effort and work is something wonderful!
Gentile appreciated the messages from the cast and considered that their empathy, humility and understanding show that they too are hobbits at heart.
