As Chicago is issuing a stay-at-home “advisory” and implementing new meeting limitations, the city has warned residents to avoid large family gatherings this Thanksgiving.
“They should cancel the normal Thanksgiving plans,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Thursday. “Particularly if they include guests who do not live in your immediate home,” he concluded.
City officials warned that at the current rate, cases are doubling every 12 days. With the current average of 2,000 cases per day, that would mean that by Thanksgiving, the city could see 4,000 new cases arriving each day.
“We are not prepared for this level of outbreak,” said Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health. “And if you look at that curve, there is still no sign that it is slowing down,” he added.
Chicago is on track to see an additional 1,000 coronavirus deaths, and possibly more, by the end of the year if changes are not made to slow the spread of the deadly virus, city officials said Thursday.
“Chicago has reached a critical point in the second wave of COVID-19, and that demands that we undertake this comprehensive and multidisciplinary effort to stop the virus in its tracks,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement announcing a new strategy called ” Protect Chicago “which includes a stay-at-home notice and new meeting restrictions as the city and the world grapple with what experts warn could be the deadliest increase in the pandemic yet.
Among the specific measures that would take effect on November 16 at 6:00 am are an order to stay home unless the outings are to work, study, look for basic goods or medical care. Still the instruction would be to maintain social distancing and always wear a mask while outside.
He also calls to totally avoid any gathering in the home that involves people who do not live in the house and asks to keep even close family and friends away. It also instructs to avoid non-essential trips out of state and, if the trip cannot be postponed, to undergo preventive quarantine depending on the state to which you go.
Additionally, non-essential businesses should be closed at 11:00 pm and they encouraged residents to use remote communication methods instead of the usual Thanksgiving gatherings, since social gatherings and events (outdoors and indoors) They are restricted to a maximum of 10 people.
This capacity limit applies to events such as weddings, birthday parties, business dinners, social events and funerals, and any place where a meeting or social event and party rooms are held.
