Regeneration, May 22, 2020. The World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned about the increase in cases of Covid-19 in South America. They fear that the region will become the global epicenter of the pandemic.
The executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, Michael Ryan, in a virtual conference pointed out how in recent days several countries in South America had a “considerable increase” in those infected.
Ryan emphasized the current situation in Brazil, which until this Friday, May 22 registers 291,579 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 18,859 deaths.
It was even pointed out that the highest case fatality rate is found in the Amazon, of 490 infected per 100,000 inhabitants, too high.
The government of the far-right, Jair Bolsonaro, has refused to decree a national quarantine for the pandemic so as not to stop the operation of the economy.
However, the 27 governors have taken measures of social isolation, closing nonessential businesses and suspending transportation between their states.
In addition to Brazil, Peru, Chile and Ecuador they present a high number of infections by the SARS-COV-2 virus.
