Curfews throughout the country from 6 p.m., heavy border controls …: here are the new measures expected in France

A press conference which should be held exceptionally by Prime Minister Jean Castex. A bad sign according to France 3 which explains that, given the importance of the announcements, several members of the Macron government will speak during this press conference: Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister of Education, Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economy, Roselyne Bachelot, Minister of Culture, Olivier Véran, Minister of Health, and Frédérique Vidal, Minister of Higher Education.

A general curfew at 6 p.m.

In the past 24 hours, France has recorded 23,852 new cases of coronavirus and 232 new deaths linked to Covid-19. Figures that have been on the rise for several days, hence the desire to put in place new restrictions for the government. The biggest measure that should be taken would be the implementation of a 6 p.m. curfew across France. Present in 25 departments, this curfew should therefore be extended to the whole of France. An option which is far from gaining unanimity within the government, but this decision would be well taken to “avoid having a two-speed France”, explain several government sources to several French media. This curfew is also expected to be in place only Monday through Friday and the rules would be relaxed on weekends.

A third confinement excluded

France, via this curfew, wants to avoid at all costs a total reconfinement of its population and it is therefore, for the moment, excluded to mention a closure of schools as the announcement BFMTV. The presence of the Minister of Higher Education Frédérique Vidal at the press conference, however, suggests that more restrictive measures should be announced for higher education students.

Stricter border controls

To avoid too strong and too rapid a spread of variants of the coronavirus in France and according to the President of the Scientific Council, Jean-François Delfraissy, who spoke on TF1 on Tuesday evening, decisions must be taken quickly aimed at “blocking the road” to the British and South African variants. And this famous roadblock to avoid the spread of this variant, in addition to barrier gestures, is the establishment of greater restrictions on travel. A call that should be taken into account by the French government, which should explain the establishment of large border controls and for people returning from a country where the new strain of the virus is spreading strongly.
