Dallas : Prosecutor accused of George Floyd death prosecuted for tax evasion

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – The Minneapolis police officer charged with murder for the death of George Floyd was indicted on Wednesday on several serious charges of tax evasion.

According to criminal complaints, he and his wife did not report earnings from various jobs, including more than $ 95,000 from an off-duty security job.

Derek Chauvin and his wife, Kellie May Chauvin, were charged in Washington County with six counts each of instigating and supporting the filing of false or fraudulent tax returns in the state of Minnesota, and three counts of instigating and supporting no filing of state tax returns.

According to the allegations, from 2014 to 2019, the Chauvin did not report $ 464,433 in income. Due to unpaid taxes, interest, and other charges, the couple owes $ 37,868 to the state.

Chauvin was arrested last month and prosecuted for third-degree murder, a charge that was toughened to one per second degree and carries a penalty of up to 40 years in prison if found guilty.

Imran Ali, a Washington County prosecutor, said the allegations are related only to tax irregularities in the state of Minnesota, not federal taxes or taxes in Florida, where the couple has a second home.

He noted that the tax debt could increase as the investigation continues.

Floyd, a black man, died on May 25 after Chauvin, who is white, put his knee against his neck for almost eight minutes while the detainee told him that he could not breathe.

He was 46 years old and his death at the hands of the police in Minneapolis sparked a wave of protests in the United States.

Chaivin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and wrongful death. Chauvin and three other officers who were at the scene were fired.

Chauvin is in custody on charges brought in the Floyd case.

Kellie Chauvin, who filed for divorce after Floyd’s death, was not in custody Wednesday.

He is 44 years old and was fired from the Minneapolis Police Department

Online court records did not mention any attorneys for them in the tax evasion case, and no one responded to a call made to Kellie Chauvin.

Her attorney in the divorce matter did not return the call that was made for comment. Eric Nelson, Derek Chauvin’s lawyer in the murder charges, did not comment on Wednesday.
