Certain members of the medical field are heard to demand that the population be put under “total” control, the French government fearing to see the economy collapse in the event of a global cessation of activity.

(.) – “It is a complete and absolute containment of the entire population that we need, like the measures deployed in China,” said in a statement the main union of medical interns (Isni) , deeming the measures taken to deal with the covid-19 epidemic insufficient.

In the crosshairs: the pursuit of activity in many “non-vital” companies, but also the maintenance of public transport and the authorization of certain exits, which result according to the union from the “ambiguous” message delivered by the government . “Your responsibility is to be clear, precise and firm (…) You must stop half-measures and equivocal speeches”, underlines Isni, in this message to President Emmanuel Macron.

Reported for the first time by the WHO on December 31, 2019, the 2019-nCoV virus has spread throughout the world in a few weeks. China, the center of the epidemic, is particularly affected.

Go further in binding measures? Despite the organizational problems that this implies, more and more doctors say they are in favor – the confinement introduced on Tuesday being considered by some too lax and partly ineffective. “You have to tighten the screw clearly. It is the only solution to stem this epidemic and to prevent having an Italian scenario ”, thus estimates the president of the doctors of France Jean-Paul Hamon, himself contaminated by the coronavirus.

“Conflicting message”

“The epidemic situation is such that the only viable solution must go through total containment,” says the Young Doctors union. “Young doctors are measuring the consequences of a total containment measure and the constraints that this will impose on the population” but “we cannot let the caregivers and patients put their lives at risk”, explains the union.

In recent days, several municipalities have been annoyed by the lack of respect by the population for the measures decreed by the authorities. “The problem is that the government’s message is contradictory. We cannot ask the French to remain confined to their homes while asking them to go to work: people do not understand, ”judge Jean-Paul Hamon.

During a visit Thursday to the Pasteur Institute, Emmanuel Macron deplored that “too many” people continue to “take lightly” the confinement instructions, Edouard Philippe having deplored for his part “lightness and carefreeness” the French.

But the government has at the same time ruled out a total cessation of activity, urging companies and employees to continue it so that the economy, already very affected by the coronavirus crisis, does not stop.

This position is not “contradictory” with the containment measures, defended the executive. “It is absolutely compatible and necessary to mix the two,” he said. An opinion that Dr. Hamon, quarantined for several days, said he did not share: “In any case, the economy will stop if the epidemic becomes uncontrollable. So we have to stop procrastinating and take much more radical measures ”.
