Donald Trump orders the withdrawal of the majority of US troops from Somalia

The Pentagon said Friday that most of the US soldiers stationed there will have to leave the East African country in early 2021. The defense did not say exactly how many men were involved. It is also not known how many soldiers will remain in Somalia.

According to US media, there are currently some 700 troops stationed in the country. In Somalia, the United States has so far supported the government and local security forces in their fight against the Sunni terrorist group Al-Shabaab .

Some of the withdrawn soldiers could possibly be deployed to countries outside East Africa, according to the Pentagon. The remaining troops are said to be stationed in countries neighboring Somalia.
