Covid-19 is much more dangerous than any vaccine: Faye Flam

(Bloomberg) – Vaccines can be scary. You are asking healthy people to roll up their sleeves and accept an injection of something mysterious, something associated with deadly germs. For covid-19 vaccines, such fears may be amplified by concerns that development was rushed and, by the way, everything related to the pandemic has become politicized. It will be difficult to gain the public trust necessary for a vaccination campaign to end a pandemic. FDA-required clinical trials cannot prove that any vaccine is perfectly safe, but what we have learned through these trials should be reassuring. These vaccines cannot spread the disease, and the risks associated with them are small compared to the risks associated with Covid-19. The risks are also small compared to the economic insecurity, loss of education and deep isolation brought about by the pandemic and our interventions to try to stop it. Recent surveys reported in the Wall Street Journal this week show that approximately 27% of those Americans say they would not get a vaccine. The same says 40% of Europeans. And the fear of vaccines is likely to get worse. In clinical trials, major vaccines caused unpleasant side effects, such as severe pain at the injection site and flu-like symptoms considerably worse than those sometimes caused by flu vaccines. People might be shocked and scared by these symptoms. As millions of vaccines are released, some people will contract terrible diseases by coincidence (multiple sclerosis, cancer) shortly after receiving the vaccines. Most will have nothing to do with vaccines, but it can be difficult to convince the public of that. Many people still believe, against all evidence, that childhood vaccines cause autism. Past experience shows that there is gain in stoking vaccine fears, says Stuart Lyman, a cancer researcher who has studied why so many people reject the vaccine against HPV, human papillomavirus. “There are all kinds of people trying to spread misinformation … Suppliers of immune boosters, vitamins and supplements are trying to make money,” he says. Although the vaccine has been approved since 2006 and prevents a number of terrible forms of cancer, compliance is still only around 50% .With COVID-19, such hesitation could cost lives and delay our return to normal life and life. economic activity. “No vaccine works in 100% of people,” says rheumatologist and founder of biotechnology Arthur Krieg. “So even some of the people who get vaccinated will not be immune, especially the elderly, who generally have lower response rates, and the immunocompromised.” Those who reject a vaccine could be a reservoir for the virus and infect others whose vaccines they don’t give them total protection: “because they were on prednisone, they had diabetes, they were cancer patients,” he says. “Those people are going to die.” Krieg says that with existing vaccines, the most serious side effects of the vaccine appear within two weeks, and almost all within two months. The clinical trials completed with the covid-19 vaccines have already lasted longer than that. He is confident that the risk-benefit ratio favors the vaccine over the risk of infection with the virus. Immunology professor Florian Krammer agrees: “If SARS-CoV-2 enters your cell, it takes over and manipulates completely his cell ”. The viral attack is profoundly more dangerous than cutting-edge vaccines, he says. They use messenger RNA, a piece of genetic material that tricks the body into producing an inert part of the virus. “It’s very minimal,” he says, compared to the virus. And rumors that have associated it with some of the long-term consequences of the infection – from brain fog to low sperm count – are completely unfounded. AstraZeneca’s other favorite uses a slightly different technique to trick the body. so that it produces the same inert viral proteins. That vaccine consists of an inactivated cold virus, called an adenovirus, with the genes to make this protein splice. Experts see no reason why this is not as safe as messenger RNA vaccines, but they raised some concern that our immune systems might react against the adenovirus carrier, making the vaccine less effective. It was the messenger RNA vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna that the companies were never shown to prevent silent cases, only symptomatic diseases. Ideally, we want vaccines that prevent infection so that we can end the pandemic. Krammer says that while protection against silent infections was not studied with mRNA vaccines, he believes these vaccines will make people less transmitters. It’s not that the virus will go away, but the vaccinations will help it become rare and mild. That vision still feels too far away. Vaccines can bring it closer. Most people who get sick from COVID-19 will recover and be fine, but more than 1.5 million people have already died. And covid-19 is indirectly harming millions of people who have never been infected. Poverty is a health hazard, and so is loneliness. Even masks aren’t completely harmless – they make it extremely difficult for many people with hearing impairments to have meaningful human interaction. Vaccine hesitation is understandable, and countering it will require compassion, honesty, and transparency. It is also essential: the immunity of the population is what will allow us to return to that wonderful way of existence that we now call normal life.Original Note: Covid-19 Is Much More Dangerous Than Any Vaccine: Faye FlamFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source. © 2020 Bloomberg LP
