In Kinshasa, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and his wife Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi went to the ambassador’s residence for “a consolation visit” to his widow and the three young orphans.

The attack on Monday which claimed the lives of the ambassador, his bodyguard and a Congolese driver from the World Food Program (WFP), Mustapha Milambo, was attributed by the Congolese authorities to the Rwandan Hutu rebels of the Forces de liberation du Rwanda (FDLR).

The latter, in a statement, rejected these allegations, pointing the finger at the Congolese and Rwandan armies.

The province of North Kivu where the attack took place is considered one of the most dangerous areas in DRC, on the edge of Virunga National Park. But according to aid officials, the road the convoy was traveling on did not require an escort.
