Despite being one of the most anticipated releases of the year, we don’t have as many details about Eternals as we would like. The UCM He usually promotes his films with various trailers and spots, but in the case of this film they have remained on the sidelines. Beyond keeping its secrets, it seems that the decision has to do with the pandemic and the chances of changing the premiere date. That said, fans are still very excited about this new installment that promises to be the most diverse of all. Although Chloé Zhao has few films in her career, Nomadland’s smash hit – 100% positioned her as one of the most important creators today, so it is hoped that her vision for these superheroes will genuinely serve to renew the titles of Marvel.

It has long been known that Zhao was the one who proposed an adaptation of Eternals because he had every intention of taking advantage of the characters to address diverse and important issues today. In recent years there has been a lot of talk about forced inclusion and superhero movies are the ones that receive the most criticism on this point. Captain Marvel – 60%, Loki – 96%, Black Widow – 87% are just some of the titles that have been attacked for dealing with issues of feminism, sexual liberation and racial inclusion, which seem to be a nuisance to many who swear not to follow the company anymore if they continue like this.
Much can be debated about forced and natural inclusion, but there is no denying that Marvel he is doing his best to adapt to a new context. It is because of that Eternals it’s so promising. Not only is the cast really diverse, it is also that the approach of each character will help to bring issues of social concern to the table. The team has done their best to keep it a secret, but everyone claims that the director was a visionary who will change the direction of the genre forever.
Perhaps the actress who has spoken the most about her experience in Eternals is Salma Hayek. Some time ago, the Mexican commented that she felt much safer working with a director, that she was surprised to be called for such a role considering her age, and that the diversity of the story is genuine and not superficial. Now, Hayek returns to comment on the project, but this time he revealed details about his character. During an interview for TotalFilm, the also protagonist of Duro de Caring 2 – 35% explained that the approach for Ajak consists of a complex perspective on motherhood because the character cannot have children and functions as a mother figure for the rest of the team.

Zhao and Hayek worked together to develop Ajak’s personality, including his connection to the other heroes under his charge:
Chloé decided to approach the topic of leadership from the perspective of motherhood… I am not a mother. I am an alien. I can’t have children. However, my character used to be a man in the comics, and now she is a woman. So, instead of just changing the gender, I proposed [a Zhao] bring something that is very specific about femininity.
Of course, the character not only works like a mother by caring for and loving them, but also by how she guides them in their mission:
I need to guide them towards something… we have a mission in life, in the world. A mother also needs to guide her children. When they misbehave, she will reprimand them, but always from the perspective of motherhood… there is some empathy there, even though I am not allowed to have empathy because I am an alien. So that makes it interesting.
In the comics created by Jack Kirby, Ajak is the leader of Eternals, but he has also been featured as a villain in some stories. Due to his powers, his interaction with humans almost always ended with him being considered a God. Maybe Zhao thought of Salma Hayek for the role because in the comics the character used to live in America. In fact, many times he took the identity of Inca and Aztec gods, including Quetzalcóatl. It is not yet known how much the powers and past of these heroes will be respected, but the director really is a fan, so we can expect a good adaptation that the other followers of Eternals they will appreciate.
