With Nomadland – 100%, Chloé Zhao managed to conquer the public and the critics who see in her a director with enormous visual potential. His images and dialogues so precise and without filling are the perfect mix to develop very human and imperfect protagonists. When it became known that she would be in charge of making Eternals for him UCM many began to take this title as the great rebirth of Marvel at the cinema. Of course, the large number of awards she has received does not make the director feel confident, and it is well known that she is also a fan of comics and movies from where she draws inspiration for her work.

Zhao was part of the jury in the Venice International Film Festival where Dune – 80%, directed by Denis Villeneuve, premiered a few days ago. After so many changes and conflicts to release this new adaptation, the public was delighted with the final cut, including Zhao who already names it as a masterpiece that fuels their hope for the future of cinema. The news here is that she was already a fan of the director of Enemy – 75% and Arrival – 94% for several years.
In a chat with Denis Villeneuve for Harper’s Bazaar magazine (via IndieWire), Chloé zhao revealed that he used his admiration to propose his vision of Eternals to Marvel / Disney:
I’d like to apply for an assistant vacancy on your set. You know, when I went to propose Eternals, I had images of your films with me as a reference.
Zhao specified that among the tapes he used the most for Eternals were Blade Runner 2049 – 88% and Sicario: No Man’s Land – 94%.
The director went on to explain her admiration for the director:
I am naturally drawn to filmmakers who have a strong hand for world-building. When I watch your films, despite being of different genres, from Sicario to Arrival to Prisoners and then to Blade Runner 2049, you managed to build worlds so visceral that I can almost touch and feel them.

The director was one of the first to speak about Dune, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Josh Brolin, and in addition to flattering the final cut, he decided to take the opportunity to support cinemas in the midst of a pandemic. It is not news to say that the global pandemic changed the way we consume cinema. Streaming platforms can now add big releases to their catalog on the same day or with little wait time. This means that a good part of the public prefers to wait to see the title at home instead of being exhibited in a commercial room. However, cinemas have done their best to ensure good maintenance and follow-up of health measures, including limiting the number of viewers.
The cinemas of the world are trying to avoid bankruptcy and releases like Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings – 95% and Free Guy: Taking Control – 96% have been indispensable to the cause. In this sense, Chloé zhao say what Dune must be seen in cinema, because only in this way can it be experienced in the best way:
The experience I had in the room just blew my mind. But I’m scared about how many people will or will not be able to have this experience as I did, at the movies, and what that means for the future.
While Dune is about to be released, Eternals should hit theaters in November and after what happened with Black Widow – 87% and with the success of Shang-chi, it is almost certain that Disney decide to make an exclusive premiere in commercial theaters. For now we only have two previews of Eternals, but it is clear that Zhao has all the talent to deliver a different visual spectacle, and if we think that the beautiful images of Blade Runner 2049 were their starting point, then we must prepare for one of the most ambitious deliveries of the UCM.
