The Akatsuki are the most powerful evil organization that Naruto, his friends and the rest of the ninja world have to deal with in Naruto. They have a complex plan that they have been working on for decades, and towards the end of Naruto Shippuden, they almost manage to carry it out.
Along the way, they manage to clinch a few wins, while other times in the series, they come very close to winning the day, only to be thwarted in their efforts at the last second. It’s obvious that if they hadn’t had such formidable opponents, and if there hadn’t been some betrayals in the ranks, the Akatsuki might have carried out their plan successfully.
10 The Pain Almost Destroys Konohagakure
The philosophy of pain is that the only way for people to truly understand each other is for everyone to experience the same types of pain as everyone else. Although there is probably a decent lesson in empathy, most people don’t try to teach this lesson by causing pain. The onslaught of pain on Konohagakure is one of the most devastating moments for the Hidden Leaf Village, as it leads a frontal attack on the community. If it wasn’t for Naruto’s intervention, it would have been successful.

9 Deidara and Sasori successfully kidnap Gaara
The beginning of Naruto Shippuden sees Gaara having recently taken his position as Kazekage, and he has been quite successful at it. But when Deidar and Sasori appear on its walls to kidnap him and take the Unicolor from within, Gaara loses his battle against Deidara, and the team manages to take him back to Akatsuki’s lair. Only the combined efforts of Gaara’s friends and family from the Hidden Leaf Village and the Sand Village rescue him.
8 Kaguya Otsutsuki is resurrected
This is not actually a goal of the entire Akatsuki organization, but since the entire organization is founded by Madara due to a manipulation by Black Zetsu, in a way, it is the first and only intention they have. Black Zetsu uses the Eye of the Moon Plan to trick the other members of the organization, in particular Madara, into doing the job of getting the Infinite Tsukuyomi, which gives him the power to resurrect Kaguya. While successful at this, Team 7 finds a way to kill her.
7 they revive Madara
Obito partially revives Madara to add his strength to that of the Akatsuki during the Fourth Great Ninja War. While this ends up being vital to their plan, bringing them as close as possible to successfully carrying out the Eye of the Moon Plan, initially it is not that helpful.
This is because he returns without eyes, and therefore without Sharingan, because he has gifted his eyes to other people who are using them.
6 Sasuke is sent to fight the Five Kage
Sasuke briefly joins the Akatsuki after his brother’s death, as he now believes that the destruction of Konoha is really necessary for him to avenge the death of the Uchiha clan. One of his first missions is to take the Eight and Nine Tails from the Five Wise Men. Despite the incredible strength Sasuke possesses at this point, he is unable to defeat them as the Akatsuki expected, leading to the start of the Fourth Great Ninja War.
5 They try to capture the Eight Tails
It is vital to the Akatsuki’s plans to capture all the Tailed Beasts so that the Ten Tails can use their power. Part of this goal includes capturing the Eight-Tails of Assassin B. Although they finally succeed, the first time they confront him, he tricks them into believing that they have achieved the Eight-Tails when they have not yet. It’s a huge blow to the morale of the Akatsuki, who haven’t really been outwitted before this point.
4 Itachi and Kisame confront Konohagakure’s Sensei
The first time the Akatsuki appear in Naruto is when Itachi and Kisame come to Konohagakure in hopes of finding and abducting Naruto, whose Nine Tails they need to complete their Eye of the Moon Plan. They are observed and confronted by the sensei of the Konoha 11, who work together to fight them. Unfortunately, the Itachi in particular is too strong even for Kakashi and his Sharingan, and if they didn’t feel like they were getting too much attention, they probably would have won the fight.
3 Create the Diezails
The Ten-Tailed is the most powerful Tailed Beast, combining all the powers of the other nine Tailed Beasts. The Akatsuki successfully brings him to life, with Obito acting as his initial jinchuriki and Madara eventually taking control, using the power of the Ten Tails to launch the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Although this is a major blow to the allied Shinobi forces, it is ultimately also the downfall of the Akatsuki, thanks to Black Zetsu’s final betrayal of the organization.
2 Sasori almost killed Kankuro
The showdown between Sasori and Kankuro is exciting, as Sasori is an accomplished puppet jutsu user who is responsible for the creation of Kankuro’s puppets. This means that you know exactly how to dismantle them, rendering them useless. He then uses his own poisonous-tipped puppet to stab Kankuro, leaving him to die in the sand. If it weren’t for Sakura’s medical abilities, which she recently learned from Tsunade, Kankuro certainly wouldn’t have survived the battle.
1 Activate the infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara Uchiha’s Eye of the Moon Plan is the original raison d’être of the entire Akatsuki organization, and involves activating the Infinite Tsukuyomi, which launches a dream genjutsu over the entire planet, making war and death a thing of the past. It also removes the free will of all who live within it. They might have been successful in keeping this going, if not for Black Zetsu, who betrays the Akatsuki to use the Infinite Tsukuyomi to resurrect Kaguya.
