One of the great mysteries of this movie season is what the hell is going on in WandaVision (Jac Schaeffer, 2021), the new miniseries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that can be seen on Disney Plus. As they say, rivers of ink are running on the matter. And one of the main questions is what is it supposed to mean the presence of all those SWORD symbols. What role does this enigmatic organization play in what happens in Westview, the town where superheroes Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) live peacefully. Trying to go unnoticed, yes.
But its reality is very strange. They seem trapped in a repertoire of television sitcoms, typical of a different decade per episode since the 1950s. So it is impossible that it is the real world. And, at the end of the episode “Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience” (1×01), we discover that someone is monitoring them. But not in a normal way, but as if he tuned in the broadcast of his sitcom crazy and heterogeneous. It’s SWORD, of course. And, in the chapter “Don’t Touch That Dial” (1×02), there are more occasions to realize it without any kind of doubt.
Several times, the superhero marriage listens strong blows they take if the impertinent branch of a tree hits their house. But perhaps it is SWORD’s attempts to “tear down” this false television world. And Wanda Maximoff finds a red and yellow helicopter in its gray front garden with the undisputed logo of the sword. Perhaps a mental projection of those who fly over the area in their vigilance of the phenomenon. Then on Dottie’s (Emma Cauldfield) property, the voice comes from the radio from agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park), who must now work for SWORD and who is addressing the protagonist.
“Wanda! Who is doing this to you, Wanda? ”He asks, as if she’s not really there but somewhere else. Or as if trying to wake her from a delicate or hallucinatory state. And, as if the above were not enough, Scarlet Witch and the late Synthézoid, whom Thanos (Josh Brolin) murders in Avengers: Infinity War (Joe and Anthony Russo, 2018) to get the Gem of the Mind, which is inherent to it, they see something incomprehensible that same night. TO a mock beekeeper coming out of the sewer with the SWORD symbol on the back of his suit. And her rewind his sitcom not to face this fact.

In the episode “Now in Color” (1×03), he resorts to the same subterfuge when Vision notices that something is wrong with his idyllic Westview. But the most expeditious thing that Wanda Maximoff chooses so that they do not take her out of her comic reverie is to expel Geraldine (Teyonah Parris) from it for going out of her way about the death of Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), her brother , in Avengers: Age of Ultron (Joss Whedon, 2015). This curious neighbor also wears around her neck a pendant with the SWORD logo And, from what Marvel Studios has revealed, we know that this is Monica Rambeau and that, then, it must be an agent of hers.
Like the beekeeper from the previous chapter. And, in the last scene of number three, Geraldine is expelled from the unreal bubble, around or next to which there is a settlement of SWORD. The one from which they observe and, presumably, try to finish off the pitote that they have ridden or in which they have put Scarlet Witch; and that reminds us of the government of The X-Files: Face the Future (Rob Bowman, 1998) or Godzilla (Gareth Edwards, 2014). As an agency that deals with keeping smart or sensitive weapons under control, it seems logical that they are involved in containing the powerful Wanda Maximoff.
