Paris. Former French coach Gilles Beyer was charged with sexual assault and harassment following the accusations of at least six skaters or ex-skaters, a judicial source reported.
The 60-year-old Beyer, at the center of a scandal that shook the world of figure skating in 2020 following the revelations of world champion and medalist Sarah Abitbol, was placed under judicial control.
Abitbol in a book published in 2020 accused his former trainer of repeated rape and sexual assault when he was between 15 and 17 years old, in the early 1990s.
He did not file a complaint because the facts had prescribed.
In a written statement to ., Beyer acknowledged inappropriate and intimate relationships with Sarah and apologized.
Following these revelations, the Paris prosecutor’s office opened in early February a preliminary investigation into rapes and sexual assaults on minors by a person in authority, all with the purpose of verifying the existence of other potential victims.
Numerous skaters or ex-skaters, such as Hélène Godard, Laure Detante or Najma Mahamoud (junior French champion in 2014) accused Beyer in statements to the press.
The Brigade for the Protection of Minors (BPM) detained Beyer on Wednesday. The provisional arrest ended yesterday and he was finally indicted by an investigating judge.
Contacted yesterday, his lawyer, Thibault de Montbrial, decided not to comment.
