At the end of a lively 70th anniversary Grand Prix, Max Verstappen claimed his first victory of the season ahead of the two Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton contenting himself with 2nd place.
A week after a crazy finish at the British Grand Prix, with a Lewis Hamilton winner on three wheels in front of Max Verstappen at the finish line, the Dutch prodigy of Red Bull took his revenge. He won in front of the world champion on Sunday at the Formula 1 “70th Anniversary Grand Prix”, still at Silverstone.
Red Bulls no problem
There was no puncture at the end of the race this time, and the first GP that escaped Mercedes this season (in 5 meetings) was played on the 42nd lap. Hamilton once thought to finish the race with his tires badly damaged, but Toto Wolff finally called him back to the pits. Verstappen thus flew in front and Hamilton ensured the blow by passing Charles Leclerc then his teammate Valtteri Bottas, who was left on pole.
“I didn’t come here, but I was really good with the tires, I didn’t know how the Mercedes were going to behave. We didn’t have a problem with the tires, I kept pushing and everything went well! ”Said Verstappen. In the world championship standings, Verstappen also took the opportunity to steal 2nd place from Bottas, however 30 points behind Hamilton.
Leclerc 4th, Ocon in the points
Charles Leclerc, who made only one stop, therefore finished 4th, ahead of an Alexander Albon in difficulty early in the race but who finished strong to beat the two Racing Point, Lance Stroll and Nico Hülkenberg (6th and 7th place ). Sebastian Vettel, the other Ferrari, is not at the end of his troubles and finished a difficult race in 12th position.
On the side of French pilots, Esteban Ocon (Renault) takes 8th place after only one stop in this race, while Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) is 11th, behind his teammate Daniil Kvyat. Romain Grosjean (Haas) inherits 16th place.
