France toughens its anti-Covid measures and implements a curfew from 8 p.m.

“The improvement in the” coronavirus “epidemic has been stalling for a week” in France and “the game is far from won”, Jean Castex warned Thursday.

“We are on a kind of plateau,” said the Prime Minister, while some 14,000 contaminations were identified Thursday. “The number of new contaminations is no longer reduced, and it has even tended to increase slightly again for a few days,” Mr. Castex noted at a press conference.

“It is our duty to adapt the measures which we had envisaged according to the evolution of the figures. We cannot lower our guard”, explains Castex. Finally, establishments open to the public will remain closed for three more weeks.

The curfew is tightened from December 15. It will start at 8 p.m., not 9 p.m., and will be strictly controlled with limited exemptions. The curfew also applies to Christmas Eve on December 31. An exception will be made for Christmas night. Travel will be authorized for the evening of December 24.
