The Argentinian Rogelio Funes Mori scored a goal this Wednesday and put an assist to lead the attack of the Monterrey of the coach Javier Aguirre in his 2-0 win over Toluca in the Apertura of Mexican soccer. Jesús Gallardo and Funes Mori scored for the Rayados, who added their third win in a row, second in the league, and jumped to third place in the standings.
The first half was alternate dominance, with Monterrey dominating in the last 20 minutes in which Funes Mori, Costa Rican Joel Campbell and José Alvarado created danger, but lacked forcefulness in the last touch. In 42, Funes Mori made three elegant cuts in the area and put a ball to Gallant, who touched his right leg for 1-0.
Toluca took over the game in the second half; in the 66th the Ecuadorian Michael Estrada shook off the defense and put a ball to Kevin Castañeda, who crashed it into the post. When the Devils played better, in 73, on a free kick, Alfonso González put a cross into the area, topped off with a head by Funes Mori to make it 2-0.
González missed the third goal in a poor definition in the area, from which Toluca attacked again; Argentine goalkeeper Esteban Andrada saved Monterrey on Estrada’s arrival in 86 and Argentine Rubens Sambueza slammed the ball off the crossbar in 89. Toluca had at least three other clear chances to score, but poor definitions or timely starts from Andrada kept Monterrey unharmed.
Rayados reached 17 points, three less than América and Toluca, which occupy the first and second positions. The Apertura will continue between Thursday and Sunday with the tenth day in which Pachuca-Necaxa, Puebla-Cruz Azul, Tijuana-Mazatlán, Atlas-León, Tigres UANL-Pumas UNAM, América-Guadalajara, Toluca-San Luis and Santos Laguna will play.
