Contains spoilers for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 18If season 17 of ‘Grey’s Anatomy was a non-stop recovering characters, it seems that season 18 is going to follow the same path. The first episode aired this week in the United States and brought with it a surprise: Scott Speedman, who briefly played surgeon Nick Marsh 4 seasons ago.
What don’t you remember about him? Nick Marsh appeared for the first (and so far only) time in episode 17 of season 14 titled ‘A day like this’. Marsh is a transplant surgeon at the Mayo Clinic, another university hospital located in Rochester, Minnesota, where Cristina Yang studied and Ellis Gray was a surgeon. Dr. Marsh arrives at Gray Sloan to collect a liver for one of his patients, but he collapses in the hallway in front of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). He then explains that he had undergone a transplant himself six weeks ago and after many tests Meredith discovers that he has a clot in his renal vein and takes him to the operating room to save his life. Throughout the entire episode, Meredith and Nick flirtatiously while waiting for the lab results, but then he went back to his hospital and was never heard from again. At the end of the chapter, Meredith confesses to Alex that although she doesn’t want a relationship with another man right now, Nick had made her feel like she had only felt with Derek, but she was his doctor and he was his patient.
According to Deadline exclusively revealed, the Speedman thing is not a cameo and The actor is here to stay and becomes a recurring character in season 18. In this return, Meredith and Nick meet again in a hotel bar during Grey’s trip to Minnesota, invited by neurosurgeon David Hamilton (Peter Gallagher), but after having a few drinks and catching up, she goes alone to your room. We can also see Speedman as Matthew in the third season of ‘You’ and until 2018 he was the protagonist of ‘Animal Kingdom’. Other old familiar faces we’ll see around the Gray Sloan Memorial this season include Kate Walsh as Addison Montgomery and Kate Burton as Ellis Gray.
Speedman and showrunner Krista Vernoff gave an interview to Deadline in which they talked about how the comeback had come about and how how it would affect Meredith and her budding relationship with Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood): “I think Meredith and Hayes were starting to connect at the end of last season,” explains Vernoff, “But he’s a father and a widower, a very recent widower, and I think there is a beautiful complexity that we will see in Meredith having, a once again, feelings for two men. ”
