Daniil Medvedev took the Paris Masters for the first time by defeating Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 on Sunday for his eighth career title and his third in a Masters 1000 series tournament.
The third-seeded Russian clinched his second win in seven games against fourth-seeded Zverev. The only victory against the German had been in the final of the Shanghai Masters last year.
“I am sure that we will face many more times. We have known each other since we were 10 years old, the journey we have had is incredible ”, acknowledged Zverev. “I hope I can do better next year.”
It was the first final and the first title of the year for Medvedev. Instead, Zverev made his third consecutive final after winning consecutive indoor tournaments in Cologne, Germany.
“Before the tournament, I was not at my best, with no finals this year,” Medvedev said. “I was complaining to my wife: ‘It can’t be, I’m not in shape, not even a final, I’m playing very badly.’ Finally I come out as the champion in (the arena) Bercy, a tournament that I love ”.
The battle between the final US Open runners-up was played on serve – and without break points – until Zverev broke Medvedev’s serve in the 12th game to take the first set.
When Medvedev sent a long right-wing return at this point, Zverev gave a loud cry that penetrated the silence of an arena with no spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Medvedev’s relentless precision from the bottom elicited a lazy response from Zverev in the ninth game of the second set, with a ball that went long.
Medvedev is one of the best in the ATP with his return and thereby undermined the confidence of Zverev, who won 57% of his first serves compared to Medvedev’s 75%.
Medvedev and Zverev could meet again at the ATP Masters Cup in London on November 15-22.
“We will see how it goes in London. I’m happy with the way I’m playing, ”said Zverev. “I just have to recover a little physically.”
