Under the name of Stream On, Spotify today held an event in which it has shown us some key elements of your plans for this year. And although they are not a big surprise, they can be the key to make 2021 a good year for the Swedish company, which despite being the dean and most recognized among streaming services, faces fierce competition that makes that your situation is not as comfortable as you might expect.
Today’s main announcement has been something that many users have been waiting for for years, to the point that it is surprising that Spotify has not yet advanced in this regard. The big news is Spotify HiFi, the long-awaited version of the service in which the music will have CD quality, and with which the company intends to deal mainly with Tidal, Amazon Music HD and Deezer HiFi, the two most popular streaming music services currently offering HiFi quality.
At the moment not too many details known about Spotify HiFi. As indicated by the company, the service will be launched sometime this year and in some countries, and although it has not been clarified, it is possible to imagine that with part of its catalog. We do not even know the price it will have, which will undoubtedly be higher than the standard subscription. Except for surprises, we can imagine that it will be between 14.99 euros for the Amazon service and 19.99 euros for the elitist Tidal. And maybe I’m wrong, but personally I see it closer to the first than the second, or in a more risky and ambitious bet, daring a price slightly lower than Amazon Music HD.
And another unknown, probably the most important, we still don’t know what the sound quality will be on Spotify WiFi. We do know that the company has been conducting tests in this regard for years, but so far no data has been revealed about it. but given that the term “CD quality” has been mentioned, we can interpret that in no case it will drop below 16-bit / 44.1 kHz, and we can hope that it will improve it, otherwise it may fall short compared to its rivals .
HiFi quality is demanded every day by more users, who have no problem paying a few euros more per month, in exchange for being able to enjoy high quality sound. This is also related to the proliferation of high-quality headphones that, of course, are a fundamental element to get the most out of these services. It is true that Spotify is a bit late, but on the other hand it seems like the right time, and if you play your cards right, could be quite a successful move.
On the other hand, and also as we saw coming a long time ago, Spotify continues to strengthen its commitment to podcasts, a business area in which it has made large investments, but which so far have not been as profitable as might be expected. Even so, it seems that its managers continue to see growth possibilities in this regard, and therefore they are going to grow their catalog in this sense, with content that at least a priori seems very interesting and of the most varied.
Among the protagonists of them we find from Renegades: Born in the US, a joint podcast of Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen in which they will talk about life in the United States, even the Russo brothers and David S. Goyer, which makes it clear to us the interest generated in Spotify by the contents related to the Marvel universes (although in this case they will not be related) and DC, which will bring some of its most relevant characters to Spotify in podcast format.
