Andrea Dovizioso returns to the World Championship this weekend at the San Marino Grand Prix, as a new driver of the PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team for the remainder of the 2021 season, replacing his compatriot Franco Morbidelli, which makes the leap to Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP.
‘Dovi’ debuted in MotoGP on 2008 after having achieved the title of World Champion of 125cc on 2004. In his first season in the premier class, he finished as best independent rider, and achieved his first victory a year later. Since his first race in the premier class, the Italian has accumulated a total of 62 podiums, 15 wins and 7 ‘poles’. What’s more, Andrea was also in the fight for the title in 2017., 2018 and 2019, ending the three years as world runner-up.
On his long-awaited return to the championship, Dovizioso will join the Malaysian squad as a teammate of his compatriot Valentino Rossi, starting with the GP Octo of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera that is celebrated this weekend in the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.
Andrea Dovizioso:“Although I did not expect to return to MotoGP in this way, I never closed the door to it and it is good to be here with Yamaha and the PETRONAS Yamaha SRT. I wanted to try to enjoy a new situation and I am very happy to return. It will be interesting to be on a motorcycle. Completely different than what I have ridden before and I am looking forward to the experience. I visited the team in Aragon and it felt almost like 2012 again and sitting on the Yamaha bike felt just as good. It was great to be able to sit down for the first time. Once on the bike and make the initial adjustments, so we are already one step ahead of FP1 here in Misano. I will need to get out on the track to understand the details and it would have been better to have done a test before jumping into the race, but I start without pressure and it will be great to get going at Misano for the last five races of the season. “Razlan Razali – Team Principal:“We are absolutely delighted with the collective decision between Yamaha and PETRONAS Yamaha SRT to welcome Andrea Dovizioso from this race through until the end of the year. It is clear that he is a highly talented and highly regarded rider and we are delighted to see him back in the MotoGP ™ paddock after his sabbatical and wearing our colors. We are delighted with the line-up of ‘Dovi’ alongside Valentino, and that we have two heroes from the home race at Misano this weekend. Of course, this is possible because ‘Franky’ passes to the factory team alongside his old colleague Fabio, and we are absolutely delighted and excited for him. He has had a remarkable performance for us, especially last year as runner-up, and this progression is exactly the goal of an independent team: to develop riders for the factory team and help them perform at their best. For the first time, the Yamaha factory team lineup and It is made up of two drivers who have graduated from our team, and we are really proud of that. For me it is a clear sign of a very strong and deep collaboration between us and Yamaha. We are always ready to support the factory, and I think that with this solution and flexibility we all clearly benefit, so we are very happy, and of course we sincerely thank ‘Franky’ for all his hard work and we wish him the best. “
