The government of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas said this Sunday that it detected the first case of the British strain of the coronavirus in an international traveler who arrived in that region on a flight from Mexico City.
« A 56-year-old man who arrived in Matamoros, from Mexico City, was identified, being confirmed to Covid-19, » the local Health Secretariat said in a statement.
« The result was positive for the new variant of SARS-CoV-2, which appeared for the first time in mid-September in the United Kingdom and which has become the predominant variant in that country, » he added.
The agency said that it followed up with travelers and flight crew, « the processed samples being negative. »
This mutation of the virus, which experts say is more contagious, prompted several countries to impose travel restrictions with the United Kingdom in recent days.
Mexico has registered an acceleration in coronavirus infections in recent weeks, which has increased the number of hospitalizations.
Just on Saturday the record for infections in a single day was broken with 16,105 cases.
The country registers a cumulative total of 1,524,036 confirmed cases of the disease and 133,204 deaths.
