The top US government expert on infectious diseases predicted on Sunday that millions of people will contract the coronavirus in the country and between 100,000 and 200,000 will die from the disease.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, interviewed by the CNN program “State of the Union”, spoke at a time when the government is debating the possibility of lifting restrictions in areas that have not been seriously affected by the virus.

“I would say that between 100,000 and 200,000 cases,” he declared before rectifying and clarifying that he meant deaths.

“We will have millions of cases,” he added, although he warned “I do not want to be strict with that number” because the numbers of the pandemic “are constantly changing.”
