The American Josef Newgarden, two-time champion of the IndyCar championship, arrives at the last race of the 2021 season 48 points behind the leader, the Spanish Alex Palou, with 54 to play, for which he acknowledged on the eve of the weekend that “to win & rdquor; his third title would be something “really amazing”. “I would be surprised if we won, it would be the most surprising of all, honestly. They have all been difficult to win. We are not in the best position, but just being in the conversation is a success because the least we wanted this season is to be here in the fight. It would be surprising, without a doubt & rdquor ;, he said at a press conference.
Newgarden took the entire press conference with humor, demonstrating the good atmosphere that reigns in IndyCar. “I think it is a very respectful championship and this is the beauty of IndyCar. We have the best in the world and we compete every weekend to be on top, but we do it in a respectful way. We go to the limit and the sprints are part of the competition, but in a respectful way. We live in a great environment & rdquor ;, he commented. “I am happy to answer two questions here because I thought I was not going to answer any (laughs). They are the ones who are really fighting for the championship here. It’s fun competing against the two of them, seeing what they’re up to Pato for Mexico and Álex for Spain; that’s what this championship is about, competing among the best in the world. I’m delighted to compete with them, but it’s a shame not to be in a better position & rdquor ;, he declared.
Newgarden shares a motor, Chevrolet, with the Mexican Pato O’Ward, second with 35 points behind, but he ruled out being able to help him in his fight. “We are not in the position where we can help Pato. I would like a Chevrolet to win this championship, but we are not in that place; To be honest, I don’t even know how I can help him win the championship & rdquor ;, he assured.
