Boris Johnson warned a few days ago that the British variant of the Covid-19 Coronavirus would be more deadly. But scientists clarify the data.
In the midst of the crisis due to the global pandemic of the Coronavirus Covid-19, the Prime Minister of England, Boris johnson, fired the alarm lights worldwide on Friday, January 22, 2021.
All after he gave a conference on his current crisis with the British variant of SARS-CoV-2. Where he stated that there was « some evidence that the new variant could be associated with a higher degree of mortality. »
This immediately shook the ground, due to the implications and dangers that a more deadly Coronavirus could pose. But the scientific community has come out to put perspective.
A serious problem, but for different reasons
The president’s statements were based on a series of preliminary data collected and published by the British authorities of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG).
There, the information collected suggests that the British variant of Covid-19 could be up to 30% more lethal in relation to previous cases of contagion.
Although the documentation itself warns about the existence of limitations in the data that still marked those results.
Low is perspective Sky News contacted a specialist scientist to clarify the situation. Dr Mike Tildesley, advisor to the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), says it is « possibly a bit presumptuous to present the findings in the early stages. »
Since for him it is not clear if that 30% is really a reflection of what we are seeing. From what he concludes from « I would certainly approach this as an element of precaution at this time. »
While NERVTAG report co-author Professor Graham Medle said that in any scenario what is clear is that the new variant is more transmittable than the original.
The question of whether it is more dangerous in terms of mortality, I think, remains open. There is evidence that it is more dangerous, but this is a very dangerous virus.
In terms of making the situation worse, it’s not a game changer. It is a very bad thing that is a little worse.
In general terms, this variant of the Covid-19 Coronavirus would be easier to transmit. What would cause a greater number of infections and therefore would increase the proportion of deaths. That is sure.
Although it is necessary to carry out more robust and extensive studies to determine with certainty if it is more lethal by itself.
