The New York Jets and Joe Flacco reached a one-year deal, the agency representing the quarterback, voted the 2013 MVP of the Super Bowl, announced on Twitter.
The decision to incorporate Flacco will give the Jets a veteran quarterback who would serve as Sam Darnold’s replacement, who is set to play his third season. However, Flacco comes from a herniated intervertebral disc, which shortened his only campaign in Denver and required surgery to correct himself.
JL Sports, the firm headed by agent Joe Linta, announced the deal on Friday, without immediately disclosing its financial terms. ESPN reported that the deal would total $ 1.5 million, which could increase to $ 4.5 million with incentives.
Flacco, 35, spent his first 11 NFL seasons in Baltimore, where Joe Douglas, the current Jets general manager, was a scout in 2008. In that year, the Ravens recruited the quarterback as the 18th overall pick. from the draft, coming from Delaware.
Flacco helped Baltimofre win the Super Bowl after the 2012 season. He beat Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.
The Ravens rewarded him for making him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history, with a six-year, $ 120.6 million contract.
But before last season, Flacco’s stay in Baltimore officially ended, paving the way for Lamar Jackson. The Ravens yielded Flacco through a trade with Denver for a fourth-round draft pick.
Flacco started the first eight games with the Broncos at the start, but he hurt his neck during week 8, in a game against Indianapolis, and missed the rest of the season.
Denver made it transferable in March, mentioning that it had failed medical examinations. However, it could be fully recovered in time for the practice camps, if they are carried out as planned despite the coronavirus pandemic.
With Flacco, the Jets suddenly have plenty of options in the quarterback role. They also have Darnold, David Fales, Mike White and James Morgan, who was recruited in the fourth round of the draft.
The need for someone experienced to supply Darnold was made clear the previous season, when the quarterback missed three duels with mononucleosis. Trevor Siemian took over, but their collaboration lasted only a quarter, injuring an ankle and missing the rest of the season.
Luke Falk, the third quarterback, started the next two games, but it was a fiasco.
