For several years now, Netflix has stood out as the largest transmission platform and streaming service, not only for its extensive catalog of movies and series, but also for the original productions that have emerged, most of them acclaimed by the audience. and for criticism. Perhaps its strongest point is the series, and proof of this is the success of Stranger Things – 76%, The Crown – 93%, A Series of Unfortunate Events – 100% or The Hidden World of Sabrina – 94%.

Of course, the miniseries cannot be left behind, and although several titles have stood out, none compares with the impact that Queen’s Gambit has had until today – 93% after almost a year of its release which, in turn, has become one of the biggest catapults for Anya Taylor-Joy’s career. The series has already won several awards such as the Golden Globe for Best Limited Series and the award for Best Actress in a miniseries, not forgetting that it is now also part of the Primetime Emmy awards race.
But everything seems to indicate that the adaptation made by Scott Frank does not have a completely error-free path. No one can deny their success, but they have made creative decisions that will cost them dearly. Recently, through Deadline a statement has been released by a real life chess champion, and that is that her name is mentioned in the last episode of the series in a dialogue that does not do justice to her career and her achievements.
In the aforementioned statement, the legal team of Nona Gaprindashvili, A Georgian player who popularized and spread women’s chess, launched a lawsuit against Netflix for defamation, in addition to having made a sexist portrait against who was the first woman to achieve the title of Grand Master of the International Chess Federation. This arises specifically from the line where it is mentioned that “the only unusual thing about her [la protagonista]Actually, it is their sex, and even that is not unique in Russia; There is Nona Gaprindashvili, but she is the women’s world champion and she has never faced men ”.

Below, you can read part of the lawsuit, with which they seek to obtain USD $ 5 million for the crime of defamation.
Gaprindashvili is a pioneer of women’s chess and a beloved icon in her native Georgia. Throughout her extraordinary career, she won many championships, beat some of the best male chess players in the world, and was the first woman in history to achieve international chess grandmaster status among men.
The statement makes an important emphasis on the dialogue that “she has never faced men” is not only false, but also sins of being sexist and disparaging. They also stated that by the year in which this episode takes place (1968), Gaprindashvili had already competed with at least 59 male chess players including 10 of those who were considered the great masters of the time.

Netflix blatantly and deliberately lied about Gaprindashvili’s accomplishments for the cheap and cynical purpose of ‘enhancing the drama’ by making it appear that its fictional heroine had managed to do what no other woman, including Gaprindashvili, had done.
The lawsuit concludes by lamenting that a program that sought to enhance the place of women in the world of chess, and at the same time inspire them, ended up humiliating a real-life player who faced several men during her chess career. Finally, Netflix only limited itself to answering that the company has the greatest respect and admiration for Mrs. Nona Gaprindashvili and her career, “but we believe that this statement has no merit and will vigorously defend the case.”
