MIAMI.- The Carnival Corp. cruise line reported that it was the victim of a ransomware attack that probably collected certain personal information about the company’s guests and employees.
The cyber attack was first detected on Saturday. The intrusion hit an encrypted part of the technology systems for one of the cruise line’s brands and certain data files were downloaded, the company said in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Carnival Corp. operates Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and other cruise lines, but the company did not say which one was affected.
Documents filed with the SEC also do not specify how many files of personal data may have been exposed, and spokesman Roger Frizzell said in an email that the company would not release more information than was in the documents.
Carnival said it has opened an investigation into the ransomware attack and notified authorities. The Miami-based company added that it has strengthened the security of its computer systems.
