HONG KONG, China – A man in Hong Kong has become the first person in the world to become infected with COVID-19 for the second time and whose case has been confirmed by experts, researchers from the University of Hong Kong reported Monday.
The new findings suggest that some patients recovering from coronavirus may have only short-term immunity.
This confirmed case could mean a before and after for scientists working on COVID-19 treatments using antibodies from recovered coronavirus patients, and for those working on a vaccine.
The patient, a 33-year-old man, had developed mild symptoms of COVID-19 in March, when he was first diagnosed. The man was hospitalized on March 29, the symptoms left, and on April 14 he was discharged from the hospital, according to the study.
The patient’s second infection occurred more than four months later after the patient returned to Hong Kong from Spain, via the United Kingdom. The man tested positive for COVID-19 a second time on August 15 and was hospitalized, although he remains asymptomatic, the study details.
