The Ministry of Labor has reached an agreement with CCOO and UGT to raise the SMI by 15 euros. The increase will be applied from September 1, despite the fact that businessmen and Vice President Nadia Calvio prefer to postpone it.

The Vice President and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Daz, has obtained the approval of the unions for his proposal to raise the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI)in 15 euros from the current 950 as of September 1. It will be enough for him to present it to the Council of Ministers, despite the fact that he does not have the approval of the business employers or Vice President Nada Calvio, who last Monday had clearly stated that it would be preferable to approve this measure in October.
In the opinion of the person in charge of Economic Affairs of the Government, “the ideal”, with regard to the SMI rise, “is that we reach a clear position in the course of September, so that this increase can already be applied for October, November and December of this year. “
Vice President Calvio has chosen this morning to postpone his assessment of Daz’s initiative until the moment when the Council of Ministers decides, reports Flix garca. “At this time there is no agreement and, therefore, we are going to let the talks continue, so that in the next few days we can make the decision, which is the government’s decision,” she indicated being asked at a ceremony in Vigo by the 15 euros increase in the SMI since September.
Waiting to know the details of the proposal, the employers CEOE and Cepyme will not support it, given that they have repeatedly indicated that it is preferable to wait until 2022 to increase the SMI and thus give an opportunity to consolidate the economic recovery. Beyond the amount and the moment of the increase, the CCOO and UGT unions, for their part, await to know the details about how much the indicator will rise in 2022, a fact that they consider essential to support the proposal.
Thus, according to Daz’s proposal accepted by the unions, the SMI will be located in 965 euros in 14 payments. The amount is lower than that claimed by the workers’ representatives and is located in the middle part of the recommendation of the committee of experts that Daz convened to study the measure. In order to support the vice-president’s proposal, which is consultative and does not require approval by the social partners, the workers’ representatives demand guarantees that in 2022 the path of increases will be maintained for reach the next December the1,000 euros (35 euros more) in 2022 and that in 2023 is 60% of the average salary.
In fact, it has been precisely the requirement of guarantees that the commitment to Labor will not be altered by Economic Affairs that has delayed the agreement. CCOO, the union with the largest number of representatives and a firm support from Daz, has been particularly demanding in this matter.
In any case, the movement represents a drastic change with respect to the tone that the social dialogue has maintained in the last two years, in which agreement has prevailed before decision-making. And the change occurs at the beginning of an autumn of important negotiations that do advise the agreement with employers and workers. “It is not a good precedent and the negotiations to come will be very complex, especially in the area of labor reform, “said the Secretary General of CCOO, Unai Sordo, during the presentation of the next union congress, in reference to the employer’s refusal to support the rise.
