Health officials and doctors in the India are baffled by a mysterious illness that has landed half a thousand people in hospital and killed one in the state of Andra Pradesh, in the south of the country.
They first detected the disease on Saturday night in Eluru, an ancient city famous for its hand-woven textiles. People suddenly started having seizures, said the public health director, Geetha Prasadini.
Since then they have been reported symptoms as sickness, anxiety Y loss of consciousness in 546 hospitalized people. Many recovered and were discharged, but 148 were still in treatment, the government spokesman said. Dasari nagarjuna.
The country’s leading scientific institutes have sent teams of experts to the city. Different hypotheses have been suggested and tested, the most recent being that it is a food contamination by pesticides.
« But nobody knows, » said Prasadini.
What confuses experts is the apparent lack of a characteristic common to the hundreds of people affected. All have tested negative for COVID-19 and other viral diseases such as dengue, chikungunya or herpes. They are not related or live in the same area. They are of all ages, including about 70 children, but few are elderly.
The first suspect was contaminated water. But the prime minister’s office confirmed that among the sick are people who do not consume water from the municipal system, and initial tests did not reveal the presence of harmful chemicals.
A 45-year-old man was hospitalized with symptoms similar to epilepsy and died Sunday night, doctors said. According to Prasadini, the autopsy did not determine the cause of death.
