New York : Church leader La Luz del Mundo receives new charge for crimes related to sexual abuse

It is the second accusation of Naasón Joaquín García, of one of the most powerful evangelical groups in Mexico

Naasón Joaquín García, leader of the controversial Luz del Mundo church, was again charged Thursday by the California state attorney’s office with 23 crimes, including rape of minors, extortion and possession of child pornography.

The indictment, which includes six new charges and the setting of a $ 50 million bond, notes that the crimes were committed between June 2015 and June 2019 in Southern California.

García, 51, has been detained in the United States for more than a year after a scandal of accusations of sexual abuse of minors and the production of child pornography, among other complaints.

This Thursday’s accusation comes after the first one was dismissed due to procedural problems more than three months ago.

On that occasion, the lawyers of the leader of La Luz del Mundo tried to obtain his release, a possibility that seems more remote with the recent accusation.

Church of the Living God, Column and Support of Truth, The Light of the World is the official name of this cult founded in 1926 by Eusebio Joaquín González, the grandfather of Naasón Joaquín García.

After achieving wide acceptance among popular sectors over the years and even political influence.

It was known as one of the most powerful evangelical churches in Mexico and the entity claimed that it had a presence in 58 countries, but the scandal of the now detainee multiplied criticism and questioning of the church.

The BBC Mundo correspondent in Los Angeles, Patricia Sulbarán, explains that this case has been surrounded by comings and goings, and although at some point it was believed that García would be released following the decision of the appeals courtThis did not happen.

“Now, on the contrary, the charges against him are increasing in a case that, from what has already been seen, promises to be long,” says the journalist.

Sulbarán adds that in one of the hearings in which the accused was present, in early July, he was seen emaciated and with advanced baldness.

“In its announcement on Thursday, the prosecution reiterated its call to possible victims to contact the authorities,” added the correspondent.
