Laysha Machado was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison, after pleading guilty to abducting a baby from a hospital, Westchester County (NY) District Attorney Anthony Scarpino announced.

“Erred! Yes, it was a terrible horrible mistake, but he was not in his right mind, he has a mental illnessZaida Salamanca, mother Machado, said a year ago.

Salamanca told News12 that her daughter has been fighting schizophrenia and bipolar disorder for four years, and that she was having an “episode” in the hospital emergency room when she mistook a strange baby for her own.

Machado, 29, was charged with entering St. Joseph Hospital in Yonkers on February 15, 2019 and fleeing with a stroller that contained a 2-year-old baby who was not her relative, according to prosecutors.

She was chased by a hospital security guard, who detained her until the police arrived. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

The prosecution alleged that the baby was abducted and “exposed to a risk of serious physical injury.” Machado pleaded guilty in December to Judge Susan Cacace, Pix11 reported.
