Orlando and Columbus Crew eliminate both New York teams

Orlando city qualified for the quarterfinals of the MLS play-offs on Saturday by beating the New York City FC after an incredible penalty shootout and Columbus Crew eliminated New York Red Bulls (3- 2).

Orlando and NYCFC ended regulation time 1-1 after scoring twice in the first eight minutes of the game. Three minutes from the end of the 90s, the Orlando Ruan defender received a direct red card for a violent action on Gary Mackay-Steven.

Then, receiving a second yellow card for going early, Orlando goalkeeper Pedro Gallese was sent off in the middle of a penalty shoot-out. Defender Rodrigo Schlegel took his place in the mess to immediately stop the last shot and give the Florida team a victory.

“This is football,” commented Schlegel. “It is emotion. One moment you think you win, the next minute you think you don’t … what matters is the end result. That is the beauty of sport. ” Orlando will face the winner of the Philadelphia Union – New England Revolution game scheduled for Tuesday.

Much less spectacular, the second game of the day saw the elimination of the New York Red Bulls by the Columbus Crew, who will face the winner of the Toronto-Nashville meeting in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
