British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that positions between London and the European Union were still very distant, before a trip to Brussels this week to try to unblock deadlocked post-Brexit negotiations.

“I am still optimistic, but I have to be honest with you, the situation at the moment is delicate. Our friends have to understand that the UK has left the EU in order to be able to exercise democratic control. We are still a long way from it,” said the conservative leader.
