Face ID, the facial recognition system present in the new iPhone 13, will stop working if a user decides to repair the screen through an unauthorized third party repair center using unofficial components. This has been demonstrated by the YouTube channel ‘Phone Repair Guru’, who has carried out the process of replacing a panel corresponding to one of the new iPhone models.
The steps to replace the screen of an iPhone 13 are very similar to that of the iPhone 12. The process also includes some facilities when changing various components. The replacement keeps the proximity and ambient light sensors functioning intact. However, and despite the fact that it is possible to connect the TrueDepth camera module to the new panel, the system does not allow to activate Face ID, since it detects it as a “non-original Apple screen”.
The YouTube channel assures that by exchanging some components andIt is possible to make Face ID work on an iPhone 13 normally. This, however, is something that a repair center is unlikely to do, since it is a slow and expensive process.
Therefore, users who need to replace their iPhone 13 or 13 Pro screen and want to keep Face ID, must go to an authorized repair center or to an Apple Store. The price, yes, can be higher.
This is what it costs to repair the screen of an iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 Pro
Those of Cupertino, who for years have been reluctant to offer facilities to unauthorized repair centers, announced that it will be possible repair iPhone and Mac in third-party workshops as long as they meet a series of requirements. Therefore, the Face ID limitation that Apple has imposed on unofficial iPhone 13 screens may make sense, although it infuriates users who are looking for a cheaper alternative when it comes to repairing their terminal.
The screen of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 23 Pro includes Ceramic Shield, a cover that, according to Apple, protects against bumps and falls. The panel, however, is not exempt from damage. Screen repair prices through Apple Care + are relatively inexpensive; about 29 euros additional to the cost of the plan. The screen repair without Apple Care + is 215 euros for the iPhone 13 mini, 311 euros for the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro and 361 euros in the case of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which has a larger screen.
