A wall of water fell violently on the Rishiganga valley in the state of Uttarakhand destroying everything in its path. The phenomenon was first attributed to the rupture of a Himalayan glacier but other hypotheses are being considered, including the formation of a glacial lake, due to the melting of a glacier, the shores of which have given way.
At least 68 bodies had been extracted from the rubble. Those still missing will be declared dead.
The Tapovan hydroelectric power station, in which around 30 people were trapped, was also ravaged by the flood.
