The president of the Government, Pedro Sáchez, has announced that it will approve this Sunday a measure to reinforce confinement, so that all non-essential activity workers stay home for the next two weeks, from March 30 to April 9, both inclusive. For this, the Executive is going to give the green light to a special paid permit.
As Sánchez explained this Saturday at a press conference, the Government has decided to follow the recommendations of the expert committee and that is why it will approve this Sunday, in an extraordinary Council of Ministers, this measure that has already communicated to employers and unions.
To make this possible, he explained, a “will be approvedrecoverable paid leave which will apply to all workers in all non-essential activities, who will not have to go to their jobs from Monday 30 to Thursday 9 April, both inclusive. “This permit will be paid by companies, according to sources in the Ministry of Labor, reason why hours not worked are recoverable.
Based on this paid leave, the affected workers “will continue to receive their wages as normal,” and then, once the health emergency passes, “they must recover the hours not provided gradually and spaced out over time,” Sánchez said. The President has indicated that the objective of this measure is “reduce mobility” to levels recorded on weekends, since they believe that in this way “the risk of contagion will decrease”. Especially now that the Government has recognized that the ICU saturation “in one week”.
“The social agents are aware of the effort, we are all united against the virus,” stressed the head of the Executive, who has asked the Spanish to do the “greatest exercise of solidarity in our history.” “Sacrifice, resistance and victory morale,” said Sánchez, who recalled that we are at the gates of Easter and that is why they want to lower mobility levels with this “forceful measure”. “These are very tough measures, but the Spanish are prepared for it.”
As he has remarked, “the idea is that a worker who works on a construction site, as of March 30, will not do it and may have that paid leave. Instead, a nurse will do it,” he added. And, according to the president, the affected services will be all those that are not classified as essential in the decree of the coronavirus alarm status, of whose approval two weeks are fulfilled right now.
Although he has avoided specifying what they are, he has said that the media is considered an essential service for the informative work they do. The measure that will be approved this Sunday will be for two weeks, but “in working terms it will be 8 days,” he concluded.
