Today, Pérez is still in the music business. After Selena’s death, he formed the Chris Perez Band with John Garza, Rudy Martinez, Joe Ojeda, and Jesse Esquivel. The band signed with Hollywood Records. His first album Resurrección won a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Latin or Alternative Rock Album. But the band ended after their second album.
For a time, he worked with Selena’s brother AB Quintanilla on his bands, Kumbia Kings and Kumbia All Starz, after being lead guitarist for Selena and Los Dinos, ABC 11 reported. But then he formed a new band of his own called Chris Perez. Project in 2010 with Angel Ferrer, My San Antonio reported.
He and his business partner, John Gomez, started a hot sauce brand, ABC 11 reported.
He got married, has 2 children and then got divorced
Pérez found love after Selena. He met Vanessa Villanueva in 1998 and they married in 2001. They had two children, Cassie and Noah, before divorcing in 2008.
Pérez wrote on Instagram about his son Noah: “To my son Noah, the sweetest person I know. Thanks for letting me be your dad. Every time I look at you, I am humbled and in awe of your greatness… reminding me what this life is all about is your specialty. I would not be the man that I am without a son like you. Daddy loves you unconditionally. (I’m NOT looking forward to my summer ending with you) “
He also wrote about his daughter, saying: “She is strong… musically inclined, vocally inclined, plays the guitar very classy (well, she had an amazing guitar teacher,), etc, etc … but what does she do to me the most? The pride is that she is her own person and does what she wants. Keep chasing your dreams Cassie. I support you”.
He told The Hollywood Reporter about Selena: “People need to remember what she stood for, the values that she had. If I were to give any message to the younger generation, it would be: Stay in school, and anything is possible as long as you work for it. If people remembered her that way, I would be happy and I’m sure she would be too. “
In 2012, Pérez published a book called For Selena, with love . In her book, she said that she couldn’t even eat for two days after Selena’s death, and turned to drugs and alcohol for comfort.

Pérez recently spoke about Selena, 25 years after her death, in Good morning america . Pérez said that when he and Selena met, Selena had her brother AB ask him what he thought of her. But Perez said he was initially concerned he might “ruffle … feathers” because he was close to everyone in the band, ABC 11 reported. “I just wanted everything to be great,” he said.
Their relationship went from being in the same band to becoming friends and then falling in love. But they had to run away because their father didn’t approve. It eventually recovered, ABC 11 noted.
Pérez wrote in his book about Selena: “I was attracted to the woman I saw on stage. But I fell in love with the real Selena, the woman who laughed hysterically while riding speedboats, was determined to beat all the boys playing video games, and wore jeans and sneakers and a baseball cap on the bus. “

Pérez said he believed Selena’s rise to fame was inevitable. “There are some things that could have gotten in her way, but I think because of who she was and how she did things and how she behaved, I almost felt like it was inevitable for her to keep climbing,” he said.
Pérez said that on the way to the hospital on the day of her death, she had a speech prepared to explain why she should never go back into situations like that alone. Finding out that he died was terrible, he said.
“I wish I had amnesia that day,” he said. “I wish I could go from last night, which was incredible, to … not knowing anything.”
