Several Mexican rappers on Tuesday condemned the imprisonment of Spanish Pablo Hasel, sentenced to nine months in prison for glorifying terrorism and insults to the crown.
“We want to show our firm rejection of the imprisonment of Spanish rapper Pablo Hasel, sentenced to deprivation of liberty and jail for his critical lyrics with the monarchy and state institutions. No artist can be retaliated for the content of their songs, “they stated in a statement signed by 16 artists.
Among them are the vocalist of the Maldita Vecindad band, Roco Pachucote, or Miguel Ángel Suárez, nicknamed Rumec Tecuhtli, general secretary of the International Rap Union, created earlier this year and a signatory of the statement.
For the artists who signed the statement, the rapper’s imprisonment on February 16 represents “a serious threat to other musicians who denounce actions by the authorities” and all those who are considered “political dissidents.”
“We are outraged to see fellow musicians and rappers persecuted and jailed for their lyrics,” they said.
