For that reason, it is understood that the adaptation starring Simu Liu is still giving something to talk about despite having released a month ago. Many have been surprised by the entertainment offered by this film, the dialogues of which are, for the most part, in Mandarin Chinese. The interpretations of its cast, the portrayal of the elements of the culture of the main superhero’s country of origin, and its implications for what will come next in the franchise are things that were very popular. However, the film also left some questions; while most things were pretty clear in Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, a relatively important thing ended up being quite ambiguous.
Although it was hinted at from the beginning, the film never answered the actual status of the relationship between the hero played by Simu liu and her friend Katy, played by Awkwafina. Despite Katy’s grandmother asking when they were getting married, Shang-Chi continued to insist that the two were just friends. The dynamics between the actors in Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings It’s something that caught many MCU fans by surprise considering they hadn’t worked before joining the Marvel Studios blockbuster.
Add to that the fact that for the first time in franchise history, the male and female leads were not depicted as lovers, but as best friends, which is quite refreshing. This also caught media attention, and Variety did not hesitate to ask Destin Cretton, its director, why her film does not have a romantic subplot.

Because Shang-Chi’s drama is deeply connected to her family and these pretty intense things she had to deal with, that romance always felt forced. A friendship like this, which looks a lot like many friends I have, [donde] She has never been romantic but she is also deeply affectionate and a very real friendship, it is something that we do not see much in the movies. It seemed very real to me, and I just didn’t feel like we had to go beyond that.
Despite this, some fans believe that there may be something between Shang-Chi and Katy in the future, but there are those who think that they should remain as best friends, while they wish that another romantic subplot does occur in a sequel: a romance between Katy and Xialing (Meng’er Zhang), Shang-Chi’s sister, who also got along well and actually had a more interesting dynamic.
In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, the director Destin Cretton revealed that he is not against the idea of Katy and Xialing being romantically involved, although the concept is not exactly on the table. In fact, when asked about the potential of the two female characters for the romantic aspect of the film, Cretton simply said that he “would not object to that.”
It seems that the lead actors are on the best friend train for now, and any other possibility is uncertain, including Xialing and Katy, although given that Marvel Studios is not in a rush to show a relationship like this on screen, it is very it’s probably too much for them. Meanwhile, the studio prepares for the release of Eternals, the next film in the franchise which will be the first to feature an LGBTQ + hero.
